PURE SWEET ORANGE ESSENTIAL OIL
Pleasingly sweet and zesty, oranges are among the oldest cultivated fruits and were mentioned in ancient Chinese literature as long ago as 2400 BC. The dried peel of both bitter and sweet oranges has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat anorexia, coughs, colds, malignant breast sores, cystic breasts, respiratory congestion, digestive spasms, stagnant digestion, and constipation. Throughout history, the fresh juice and oil from the pressed peel have offered valuable protection against infectious diseases as well.
Depending on the individual, sweet orange essential oil can be either relaxing or gently energizing. For most children, it acts as an aromatically pleasing sedative for the nervous system — great for use with hyperactive kids or at bedtime. But for many adults, I’ve noticed, it simply puts them in a good mood, instilling a sense of refreshment and revitalization. This is my oil of choice for diffusing in the morning; it starts my day off on a cheery, sunny, happy note.
One of the best ways to utilize the digestive benefits of orange essential oil is in synergy with peppermint oil in a massage oil blend. When combined, they are quite effective at relieving constipation, cramping, and gas. When using it in a massage oil blend for anything to do with the digestive system, remember to massage the belly in a clockwise direction, beginning at the navel and spiraling outward, ending at the top of the left thigh, to encourage the digestive process to move in the normal direction.
The astringent and toning action of orange essential oil is most beneficial for oily skin or scalp, congested skin (cystic acne or breasts), and cellulite. Orange improves the sluggish or stagnant flow of sebum (oil) and lymph within the body.
