PURE LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL
Delightfully refreshing and invigorating, lemons have long been regarded as something of a cure-all, especially with regard to infectious illnesses, as they are high in bioavailable vitamin C. They also deliver moderate amounts of potassium, folic acid, and capillary-strengthening flavonoids. Both the juice and peel have been used to reduce fever in cases of malaria and typhoid, prevent colds, moderate acidic disorders such as rheumatism and arthritis, and treat dysentery and liver congestion.
It also tones and tightens skin tissue due to its astringent and diuretic action, being a common ingredient in formulas used to treat edema, cellulite, and bruises, as well as oily and acneic skin. Its strong antibacterial and antiviral properties help prevent and/or combat infections resulting from colds and flu, plus it aids in healing all manner of skin ailments, from minor cuts, scrapes, and insect bites to warts, boils, ulcers, and pustular eruptions. Lemon’s bright aroma freshens and cleans the air. Especially when combined with eucalyptus essential oil in a spray, it makes an invaluable air purifier during cold and flu season.
Lemon oil serves as a tonic for the circulatory system, helping to strengthen capillaries while improving sluggish blood and lymphatic flow, so I recommend it in massage oil formulations — often mixed with cypress essential oil — for those with a weak venous system, exhibiting varicose and spider veins in the legs. It’s great for reviving tired, achy legs, too, especially when combined with peppermint essential oil.
