PURE FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL
Held in high regard since antiquity, frankincense was at one time almost as highly valued as gold. It is recognized as one of the first spices brought back to Europe from the East and was one of the gifts from the three Magi to the infant Jesus. Incredibly rich and aromatic, it has been burned as an incense to appease the gods and to rid the sick of evil spirits; it is still used during Catholic mass to purify both the body and the soul.
Frankincense resin and the essential oil have a long history of medicinal use by many cultures to treat — among other ailments — arthritis, rheumatism, syphilis, leprosy, inflammatory skin conditions, menstrual cramps, muscle aches, digestive and nervous complaints, and respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections.
The ancient Egyptians prized frankincense as an ingredient in the embalming process and in facial masks, so it should come as no surprise that today, frankincense essential oil is particularly valued for its affinity for the skin. It preserves skin’s youth, helps tone and tighten, and balances sebum production; it is perfect for all skin types. I include it in treatment blends for sunburn, scar prevention, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, minor injuries, bruises, and dry, cracked, fissured, or chapped skin. I also include it in formulas for aging skin, with an aim to retain its taut youthfulness. Adding antiseptic frankincense to diffuser blends and vapor rubs helps loosen and drain mucus and relieve coughing. It’s also a wonderful additive to oil blends and salves to help relieve tense muscles and achy joints.

Product Abstract: Frankincense originates from a small scraggly but hardy tree indigenous to the Middle East, which is small with abundant pinnacle leaves and white or pale pink flowers. The resin begins as a fragrant sticky milky-white liquid that flows from the trunk of the tree when cut. The dried tears are collected, and the resin is then distilled, producing the precious oil. The resin is known as olibanum, derived from the Arabic al-luban or ‘that which results from milking’, referring to the milky sap. It is used as incense, and has been traded for 5,000 years. Widely used in ancient Egypt, it was one of the ingredients used in the holy oil described in the Talmud. Frankincense was brought back to Europe by Frankish Crusaders (Frank-incense), and the oil is still highly prized today in the perfumery industry, and widely used in the manufacturing of skin-care products.
